Volunteers are an integral part of the Silverado Hospice Circle of Care! Our trained volunteers spend time with patients and families to provide support and love in many ways. They keep patients company, read to them, or take them for walks. They give care relief to weary caregivers, run errands, help in the office and provide bereavement support to grieving families. Individuals with musical, artistic, massage and blanket-making skills are welcome.

Who can become a volunteer?

Anyone who has a loving heart and an open mind. Silverado Hospice offers equal opportunities to everyone, regardless of age, sex, culture, religion or background.

Is there any training involved?
There is a comprehensive training consisting of two five-hour sessions each. Some topics covered are confidentiality, communication skills, psycho-social and spiritual issues, stress management and terminal illness overview. Trainings are held on weekdays and weekends to accommodate differing schedules. On-going support is always available.

What is the time commitment?
The typical time commitment is 2-4 hours per week for one year, but individual situations are taken in consideration.

Can I volunteer near my home?
We make every effort to assign patients within 15 miles of the volunteer's home.

What else can I do to help in addition to visiting patients?

We always need clerical help in the Hospice office. Special skills, such as massage therapy, knitting lap blankets or trained pets can be utilized, too.
