Jolene_farish

Jolene Farish

Administrator
Jolene is the middle child with two sisters. She was raised by members of her family working in the social services/helping profession. She grew up with her grandparents living next door as a native Southern Californian. She feels very blessed to have been influenced by their wisdom throughout her upbringing; as they shaped her view of the world and empowered her to become a leader in the field of service to our elderly population.

Jolene recalls a clarifying conversation with a Silverado Resident some years ago, when she took away a valuable insight. “Jolene”, the Resident explained, “your team is only as strong as its weakest team member”. In that moment, she realized that her role as the Administrator was one of a complex and impactful nature, to an even larger degree than she had once calculated. She has been called to create and nurture a culture of love for Employees, Residents, and Families alike. The education and development of her team is of primary importance to her and it is through their strength that her purpose for our memory impaired Residents and Families, is served. To that end, Jolene aspires to give each person she encounters, the L.I.F.E. they were meant to live!

Jolene earned her undergraduate degree in Psychology and her Master’s Degree in Social Work from San Diego State University. She began her career with Silverado Senior Living in 2003 as the Director of Resident and Family Services, served in that capacity for 3 years, she was then promoted to Administrator.

Amy loves to lead by example, and she is always actively involved in the day-to-day functions of the community.

When she’s not caring for residents at Silverado, Amy enjoys reading books, watching movies, and playing piano.
Dorit_hakak

Dorit Hakak, LCSW

Family Ambassador
Dorit has an identical twin who is also an LCSW, and they have both dedicated their careers to serving the elderly population. Growing up, both of her grandmothers spent time living in the home and played an integral role in the family’s daily life. Dorit relates her passion for serving the elderly and their families directly to the influence of her grand mothers.

Dorit became familiar with Silverado Senior Living during her tenure as a Geriatric Care Manager. Her then client, a 72 year old, brittle, insulin dependent diabetic who lived at home, was behavioral and extremely demanding. This challenging gentleman was eventually placed at Silverado, where she visited him weekly and monitored his care.

Dorit explains that through this experience, she gained a profound insight. She, as many of us have, thought that “home” was the best place for someone to live if they had the means, even in the face of memory impairment. In many cases, it is to the contrary. People with memory impairments need each other and thrive with social engagement. “Dementia is not the end of the road. There is still joy to be experienced”, she concludes.

Dorit received her Master's Degree in Social Work from the University of Southern California and has served the geriatric community for over ten years, working in community agencies, skilled nursing facilities, and hospitals. She joined Silverado Senior living as a Family Ambassador in 2004, where she assists families in making a myriad of difficult decisions surrounding the placement of their loved ones at Silverado.

Kimberly_sturm

Kimberly B. Sturm, M.A.

Director of Resident and Family Services
Kim was born and raised in Long Island New York. She is the oldest of 3 children with 2 younger brothers. As a child Kim remembers her mother Linda encouraging them to participate in community volunteer work. Whether it was visiting senior citizens in their homes or serving food at local hospitals to HIV/AIDS patients, her mother instilled a love of community service work in her children.

Kim's passion for volunteer work has taken her all the way to Africa. She became a member of the Silverado team in 2006 as The Director of Resident & Family Services in Escondido until an opportunity to live & work in Africa came about. She lived with a Kenyan family in a simple setting while working at a school in Kibera, the largest slum in Sub-Saharan Africa. The experience has changed her life forever. The immense love & open arms she experienced from the Kenyan community was indescribable. After her volunteer experience she traveled extensively through Turkey, Syria, Jordan, Egypt, Sudan, Ethiopia & Kenya.

Now residing back in Southern California Kim has once again joined the Silverado team, this time in Encinitas. She earned her undergraduate degree from SUNY Buffalo in Environmental Science in 1999 & her Master's Degree in Counseling Psychology from National University in 2006. She is working towards her license as a Marriage & Family Therapist.
Janelle_johnson

Janelle L. Johnson, BA

Director of Resident Engagement
Janelle grew up in Tucson, Arizona and is the third of four children in a military family. Her great aunt, from her father’s side, came from Minnesota every year to live with the family during the winter months. Both the great aunt and another aunt were diagnosed with Alzheimer’ in their later years. “They were intelligent, adventurous and energetic women focused on social issues that greatly influenced my outlook as well as respect for seniors,” recalls Janelle when thinking about her personal role models. Her first volunteer work as a teen was through the American Red Cross at a skilled nursing home, which also left a strong impression on her.

Although successful as a corporate retail buyer and manager spanning 20+ years, Janelle felt a strong desire to make a career change into a field with a direct and positive impact on people’s lives. With the support of her husband, Janelle took a leap of faith and became a full-time student in 2004 to pursue a degree that would transition her into social services, with targeted coursework relating to gerontology. Recognizing a unique opportunity, a friend already working for Silverado recommended that Janelle volunteer at Silverado’s Encinitas community. She was soon hired as a co-facilitator for their Friday Morning Club, an adult day program for recently diagnosed Alzheimer’s individuals. She was drawn to the Silverado mission, focusing not on what dementia had taken away from someone, but rather promoting well-being through participation in what they still can do. Janelle finds working at Silverado rewarding for the privilege and joy of getting to know each resident and cultivating activity programs based on what their interests are.

Janelle graduated with honors from the University of California, San Diego with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Sociology in 2008. She joined Silverado part-time in 2004 as a Club Facilitator and Activities Assistant. Janelle also served as a crisis volunteer for the Trauma Intervention Program of San Diego from 2004-2006, working with emergency response agencies to assist secondary victims, many of whom were elderly. She was promoted to Director of Resident Engagement in 2009.
